Unable to publish .ics to an URL

Post by VMUser » Wed Apr 25, 2012 5:50 pm

Hello,

I must be doing something completely wrong.

I have several .ics calendars that are located on our network and are used by multiple users. Now I wanted to place those .ics calendars onto a web server instead on our network.

At first I used that ical-mac.com example from your help file:

Code: Select all

http://private.ical-mac.com/MyUser/calendars/MyCalendar.ics
But it didn't publish (of course I registered first at ical-mac.com).

Then I used a webspace like this: http://mydomain.de/OurCalendars/MyCalendar.ics

But it still doesn't publish. Then I created a FTP login and used ftp://ftp.mydomain.de/OurCalendars/MyCalendar.ics -- not working at all.

If I click on "Publish Now" nothing happens -- no error message, nothing. Is there an error log I could read?

I'm using the actual version 9.0 and now 9.1 beta.

I must be completely lost somewhere.

Hi VMUser, did you enter the correct username and password in the Publish tab? If so, maybe your firewall is blocking VueMinder from publishing.

Also, if you're using a proxy server, make sure the proxy information is entered in the Proxy Settings (accessed via the Options menu). If a proxy isn't used, make sure the box to use a proxy server is unchecked in the Proxy Settings.

Hi Dan,

yes, I entered the correct username and password in the Publish tab. I double checked it. Then I used a folder on my web server without any password protection -- without success.

I switched my firewall off without success.

And the proxy server is unchecked.

I have absolutely no clue what's wrong.

Isn't there any error log in VueMinder or a debug mode where I can see what happens?

Best regards,
Karl

Hi Karl, I'm not sure what is causing the problem either. The next version has been improved so that when the "Publish Now" button is clicked on the Publish tab of the Calendar Properties window, a message will appear if there are any errors. This might help determine what is causing the problem. The next version will be released by April 29.

Version 9.1 is now available for download. To update, click the "Check for Updates" command on the Help menu.

Hi Dan,

thanks for the update. After I click on "Publish now" I'm getting this error message:
Unable to publish calendar 'Calendar name'.
Der Remoteserver hat einen Fehler zurückgegeben: (405) Unzulässige Methode.
In English something like:
The remote server issued an error: (405) Invalid method.
I was trying to publish to:

Code: Select all

http://mydomain.de/MyCalendar/Calendar1.ics
Best regards,
Karl

Hi VMUser, thank you for the information. VueMinder publishes using an HTTP "PUT" command. Based on the error message, your server might not be configured to support this command.

A workaround would be to publish to an ICS file on your local hard drive, and then periodically upload that file to your server, using an FTP client. If your FTP client supports command-line parameters, you could automate this using the Windows task scheduler.

You could also try configuring the server to support the PUT command, assuming you have admin access.

Hi Dan,

thanks for your support.

I'm trying to configuring my server for HTTP PUT method, but I didn't find out how to do yet.

Now I was trying to use FTP with your calendar:

Code: Select all

ftp://mydomain.de/MyCalendar/Calendar1.ics
But I'm getting now this error:
(550) File not found or not available.
The FTP login data I put into the box "Authentication".

Thanks,
Karl

Hi Karl, on your server, is there a folder named "MyCalendar"? If not, try creating the folder using an FTP client or whatever you prefer. I think that might fix the error.

Hi Dan,

thanks a lot for your fast support.

I made the following error:

For FTP access usually you need:
  • Host name (Server name)
  • User name
  • Password
The host (server) name in my case is simply "mydomain.de", because this dedicated FTP login is already directed to the folder "MyCalendar".

So because VueMinder does not provide a special login mask for FTP, I had to put in this: Now it works. Maybe you could clarify those special needs for HTTP PUT and FTP in your help file a little bit more.

One more question: What is the advantage of HTTP PUT over FTP?

Thanks and best regards,
Karl
