VueMinder Calendar Pro 8.0.0 Beta Activity

Post by VueSoft » Sat Nov 13, 2010 11:09 pm

Version 8.0.0 has been officially released. It can be downloaded from the link below. Scroll down to see what is new in this version.
http://www.vueminder.com/download/VueMi ... _8.0.0.exe

Before installing, it would be a very good idea to backup your current data using the "Backup Data" command on the File menu. Also, ensure VueMinder isn't running before upgrading to the beta by right-clicking the VueMinder icon in the system tray and selecting "Exit".

Also note, any data saved using version 8.0 will probably not be able to be opened in version 7.4.3 or earlier. Version 8.0 can open data from previous versions, but not vice versa. This is due to changes to the structure and formatting of the data files in version 8.0.

VueMinder Calendar Pro 7.5.0 Beta 5 can be downloaded here.

Here's a brief listing of what has changed:
- Corrected copying and pasting of notes in the Day and Week View (column mode), where a note wasn't being pasted into the selected day.
- Corrected problems with the List View not refreshing row colors when viewing by priority or category, and an event or task has its priority or category changed.
- Corrected a problem with the category field in the Event Editor or Task Editor not being cleared, if the "..." button is clicked to access the Category editor window and all categories are unchecked.
- Corrected a problem with the Details pane not refreshing when a recurring event is shown and its series is modified, such as the category being changed.

VueMinder Calendar Pro 7.5.0 Beta 6 is now available and can be downloaded here.

Here's a summary of the new changes that went into Beta 6:
- Added the ability to import events from csv and tab-delimited text files.
- Added the ability to drag-and-drop ics, Excel, csv, and text files into the VueMinder Calendar window. The file wil be automatically imported, without requiring additional input. A summary of the import will be shown.
- Added support for additional fields when importing from Excel, csv, and text files. Event recurrences, reminder settings, and event colors can now be imported from these file types.
- Added the ability to define custom field mappings when importing Excel, csv, and text files. Column names that aren't recognized can now be mapped to desired destination fields.
- Added the ability to export events to csv files.
- Improved the import and export windows to make them easier to use.
- Improved the inline "Click to add" button, to also allow inline creation of notes and tasks.
- Improved reminder emails for events and tasks that are marked as high or low priority, to flag the email with the corresponding priority level.
- Corrected creation of events from the Timeline view, so the event time will default to the selected timeslot(s).

When importing events from CSV, Excel, and tab-delimited text files, the following “To Fields” are supported. Most of these are optional. The only fields that must be present are “Title” and “Start”. Also, since these fields might not be applicable to every event, you can leave the value blank to have the field ignored for a particular event.

Title – The event title text.

Location – The event location text.

Category – The event category. If there are multiple categories, separate them with semicolons. Example: “Work; Important; Follow-up”

Calendar – The event calendar. If not specified, the imported event will be assigned to the “Destination calendar” selected in the Import window. Otherwise, this will override the selected destination calendar.

Priority – The event priority. Example: “High”.

Start – The event starting date and time. For an all-day event, just the date is needed. The format should match the date/time format used for events in Windows, based on your regional settings.

End – The event ending date and time. If this isn’t specified, the Duration field will be used. If the Duration field is also not specified, the event will be assumed to last all day if the Start field doesn’t include a time of day in it text. Otherwise it will be assumed to be 1 hour in length.

Duration – The duration of the event. It should be formatted as “N span”, where N is a number and span is “minutes”, “hours”, “days”, ”weeks”, or “months”. Example: “30 minutes”.

All Day – An all-day flag. Values that are blank, “No”, or “False” will be treated as non all-day events, while values of “X”, “Yes”, or “True” will be treated as all-day. The same yes/no value parsing is used for other flag input fields, such as the “Completed” field.
Completed – The event completion flag. When set, the event will be marked as completed.

Popup Reminder Time – The time before the event start that a popup reminder should appear. If blank, there will be no popup reminder. Otherwise, specify the length of time as “N span”, similar to the Duration field format. Other time-span fields, such as “Desktop Alert Time” also use this format.
Desktop Alert Time - The time before the event start that a desktop alert should appear. If blank, there will be no desktop alert.

Email Reminder Time – The time(s) before the event start that an email reminder should be sent. If multiple times are desired, separate them with semicolons. The reminder will only be sent to the email address specified in the Email Settings. Additional recipients cannot be specified by the import. This could be improved after I improve the reminder settings to allow direct email addresses instead of needing to be associated with pre-defined contacts.

SMS Reminder Time – The time(s) before the event start that an SMS reminder should be sent, similar to the “Email Reminder Time” field.

Run Program Name – The executable to run, including the full path (if not in the Windows path variable) and filename, when the event starts. This could be used to initiate a backup process, launch a web browser, or whatever else you want to start automatically. Example: “iexplore.exe”

Run Program Parameters – Parameters to pass to the executable specified in the “Run Program Name” field. Example: “http://www.vueminder.com

Recurs Daily – When this flag is set, the event will be imported as a daily recurring event. The first occurrence is specified by the “Start” field.

Recurs Weekly – When this flag is set, the event will be imported as a weekly recurring event. The first occurrence and day-of-week is determined by the “Start” field.

Recurs Monthly – When this flag is set, the event will be imported as a monthly recurring event. The first occurrence and day of month is determined by the “Start” field.

Recurs Yearly – When this flag is set, the event will be imported as a yearly recurring event. The first occurrence and day of year is determined by the “Start” field.

Recurrence – This field can be used as an alternative to the recurrence flag fields like “Recurs Daily”. Supported text values are blank, “Daily”, “Weekly”, “Monthly”, or “Yearly”.

Font Name – The name of the font, to override the default calendar appearance. Example: “Times New Roman”

Font Size – The size of the font. Example: “12”

Font Color – The color of the event text. All color fields support several formats. These can be “R, G, B”, where R, G, and B are each numbers 0 through 255 representing the red, green, and blue components of the color. Example: “128, 200, 30”. The format can also be a hex number starting with either “0x” or “#”. The bytes are ordered RRGGBB. For example, yellow would be “0xFFFF00”. A pre-defined color name can also be specified as text, instead of numerically. Example: “Yellow”. To see a list of pre-defined color names, click the drop-down button on any of the color inputs and select the “Web” tab. All the color names specified on that tab can be specified as text when importing.

Background Color 1 – The primary event background color. The format is the same as the other color fields.

Background Color 2 – The secondary event background color, as well as its border color. The format is the same as the other color fields.

Gradient Style – The gradient style used to blend the two background colors together. The value is text. To see a list of supported values, click the Gradient style drop-down button in the appearance settings. Note, if a style as spaces in its name in the drop-down list, the spaces should be removed in the specified import value. Example: “GlassTop”.

It has been a few weeks since the last beta. Version 7.5 has morphed into version 8.0, due to a number of major improvements going into the next version.

A new version 8.0 beta will be available soon, along with several articles highlighting the newest features. I apologize for the delay in releasing an updated beta, but it will be well worth the wait!

Version 8.0.0 Beta 1 can be downloaded here.

Here's a summary of the changes that went into the latest beta. All the previous changes that went into the now defunct version 7.5.0 are also present. This is just a list of the new stuff. Yes, it has been a busy month indeed...

- Added the ability to link events, tasks, notes and contacts with any number of other events, tasks, notes and contacts. Links can be established on a new "Links" tab of the Editor window. When an item is linked, the link will be 2-way, allowing you to easily organize and keep track of all sorts of information, such as all the past meetings or other activities associated with a particular contact.
- Added a "Files" tab to the Event, Task, Note, and Contact Editor windows, for attaching file links to items. The Files tab can be viewed as a list, details, icons, thumbnails, etc.
- Added the ability to define multiple note and task calendars, each with its own unique appearance and default settings.
- Added the ability to override the color and appearance settings of individual notes in the Calendar View. these settings will override the default associated calendar or category appearances for the note.
- Added the ability to associate notes with one or more categories. A Category column has also been added to the Note List.
- Added a "Day" tab to the Desktop Calendar. The tab orientation has also been modified, so tabs will be displayed along the left side of the calendar instead of the top, allowing more space for events to fit.
- Added a spell checker to the text editor in the Event, Task, Note, and Contact editor windows. The spell checker can automatically underline misspelled words in red, or run a spell check by clicking a button on the toolbar. Unrecognized words can be added to a user-defined dictionary. Note, this spell checker currently supports English only. The toolbar buttons for spell-checking will be hidden if Windows is set to a non-English language.
- Added the ability to drag events, tasks, and notes from their List tab to a date in the Month view. This will also work for tasks and notes that were not previously configured with a date.
- Added Google username and password fields to the Program Options window, along with a link to help if the specified Google username and password isn't working.
- Improved the List View. It is no longer a single "List" tab. Now, the Event, Task, Note, and Contact Lists each have their own tab in the main window, allowing easier access, more flexibility in how these views are arranged, and the ability to simultaneously display multiple list types.
- Improved the all-day event area at the top of the Day and Week views. Previously, this area was limited to showing up to 16 all-day events, tasks, or notes. Now, it can show up to 50.
- Improved the date navigation bar at the top of the Day, Week, Month, Timeline, and Year views to show a "Today" button.
- Improved the drop-down color boxes to be more user-friendly. A color-wheel allows quick selection of a custom color, and an easy mechanism has been added for grabbing any color displayed elsewhere on the screen.
- Improved the Contact Editor window to not prevent interaction with other windows, and to allow more than one Contact Editor window to be open at a time.
- Improved navigation between contacts in the the Contact Editor window.
- Improved the Contact Editor window to have a "Website" field for a contact. A Website column has also been added to the Contacts List, and can be imported/exported.
- Improved the Contact Editor to have a "Category" field for a contact. The list of categories is consistent with the category list defined for events, tasks, and notes. The Contact List will show a "Category" column, and this field can also be imported/exported.
- Improved the Contact List to default to grouping contacts by their associated "Group/folder" field. Grouping can be removed or modified by right-clicking the column header and selecting the "Show Group By Box" option. Drag columns into or out-of the box to modify the row groupings.
- Improved the "Email Address" column of the Contacts List to make it clickable. Clicking the email address will initiate a new email to the contact, using the default email program (if one is installed).
- Improved the Details Pane to show details for the contact selected in the Contacts List.
- Improved searching in the Event, Task, Note, and Contact Lists. A red X button has been added to the Search text field, allowing all search result tabs to be closed and the full listing restored.
- Improved inserting of picture thumbnails in the description/details tab of the editor windows. Multiple thumbnails can now be inserted at the same time. Note, for performance issues, it's recommended to keep the number of inserted thumbnails per item to 8 or fewer.
- Improved dragging of pictures into the description/details tab of the editor windows. Instead of a text link being inserted, a linked thumbnail will be inserted instead.
- Improved default event settings in the Calendar Properties window to allow a default event location to be specified.
- Improved importing of contacts from Outlook. Contact sub-folders will also be imported, and contact groups will be automatically assigned based on sub-folder name.
- Improved the Category, Priority, and Location windows. When commanded from the Tools menu, the button at the bottom of the window will now be labeled "Save and Close". When commanded from an Editor window, where selections can be made and returned, the button will be labeled "Select and Close".
- Improved adding contact birthdays and anniversaries via the Contact Editor window. The added event will be linked with the contact. Deleting the contact will prompt to the program to ask if the linked birthday or anniversary should also be removed from the calendar.
- Corrected a memory leak which could cause slow program performance, higher than expected memory use, error messages, and a variety of other problematic behavior.
- Corrected a problem with email and text message reminders sometimes not transmitting if multiple reminders are scheduled to be sent at exactly the same time.
- Corrected the font size override when printing to only override the text size used for events, tasks, and notes - not other text like month names and date numbers.
- Corrected problems with the Note List sometimes showing notes outside the specified date range, or sometimes not showing notes defined within the specified date range.
- Corrected a number of problems seen when more than one column is selected for grouping in the Event, Task, and Contact Lists.
- Corrected problems refreshing the row groupings in the Contacts List when contact data is modified.
- Corrected problems with calendars sometimes becoming synced with Google Calendar after deleting an event, even if the calendar was not previously commanded to sync with Google Calendar.
- Corrected problems with event categories being lost after syncing with Google Calendar.
- Corrected event location text when printing Weekly layout Style 2, to only show the location text once.
- Corrected naming of custom fields when exporting to ICS files.
- Corrected the "Open Contact" menu command to be hidden if no contacts have been defined yet.
- Corrected the "Notes" column in the Contacts List to not show HTML codes.
- Corrected importing of contact notes from Outlook. Previously, multi-line notes would be imported as a single line.
- Corrected inconsistencies between the "Show Notes in Calendar" and "Show Tasks in Calendar" menu options, and the checkboxes in the Calendars list.
- Corrected coloring of overdue tasks when the system date advances to the next day. Tasks will automatically recolor within 1 minute of the date change.
- Corrected coloring of rows in the Task List when viewing colors based on priority and the right-click "Prioritize" menu command is used to adjust the priority of a task.
- Corrected a problem with changes to the email or SMS reminder time not being saved if input focus is still in the reminder time field when the Event or Task Editor window is closed.
- Corrected the "Due In" value shown in the popup reminder window to not show fractional weeks or months when an event or task is due more than 4 weeks from the current date. A rounded number of weeks will be shown.
- Corrected the Alt+Tab window list to not show VueMinder when the program starts minimized during Windows startup.

I've written up an overview changes going into version 8.0. The overview can be found here.

To be sure, there are far more changes going into 8.0 than covered by the overview, but I think this would be a good place to start reading if you want to learn about what's new in version 8.0.

Version 8.0.0 Beta 2 can be downloaded here.

This version fixes some minor bugs in the previous beta. It also adds a scroll bar to the Timeline view. This will probably be the last beta before 8.0 is officially released. To all beta testers, a huge thanks!
