Database not on C:

Post by LaFouine94 » Fri May 23, 2014 8:05 pm

Hello,

Is it possible to store MySQL Database elsewhere than on C:, on a data disk for instance ?
So, if my C: System disk crashes, I will not lose my database, if it is on D:

Thanks

Hi LaFouine94, welcome to the forums. It's possible to move the database to a different drive, but it will require some effort. Here are the basic steps:

1. Create the new folder where the data files are to reside.

2. Open MySQL Workbench.

3. Click "Options File" on the left side of the MySQL Workbench window.

4. Change the "datadir" setting to the new folder, then save and apply.

5. Copy the data files to the new location. Typically the data files are in C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6 (or whatever version...important thing is the C:\ProgramData part).

4. Shut down the MySQL service. There should be an icon in the task tray for doing this, if you installed MySQL Notifier.

5. Rename the old data folder.

6. Restart the MySQL service using the task tray icon.

There are also some tools that can automatically backup the database and save it to a cloud drive, like Dropbox. I haven't used it myself, but one tool is linked below. The free version should work since all the VueMinder data is stored in a single database.
