Public calendar glitch, holidays and other subscriptions

Post by GreatLakes » Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:12 pm

Hi Dan,

I subscribed to the public holidays calendar. As you know, when you subscribe to the public holiday calendar, and I assume other public calendars, all fields are read only so you can not modify anything. However on holidays the location is set to blank. When you look at the detail pane, you will see a blank location as one of the boxes to check. You can not enter anything as a description because it is read only.

Should you not check this blank box in selecting the location then no holidays will show up. This is not obvious. This is also the same for priority as well where there is a blank box. If you do not check the blank box here for priority, no holidays will show up. I am guessing that this might be common in subscribed calendars and this could be confounding.

Is there a way on the category list that a public calendar which enters a category or priority could be flagged to identify that this field has been entered through a public calendar rather than by me.

Thanks.

Hi GreatLakes, thank you for the feedback. Some public calendars, like the sports calendars, do include location values. Others have blank locations, as you've found. The reason a blank location checkbox is provided is so that events that have no location can be filtered. This is also the case for events that have no associated priority - which is most or all of the public holidays.

I understand this could cause confusion, but I don't want to take away this capability because someone might be using it. I also don't want to change how the location and priority checkboxes work for subscribed calendars versus local calendars, because I think that could create even more confusion.

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the Category List to show where the category came from. If you're using the Pro version, you can find which events are associated with a category (and whether those events are from a subscribed calendar) by sorting or filtering the "Category" field in the Event List.

Thanks again for the feedback. Please let me know if you have any other questions or suggestions.

Thanks Dan,

I figured out from trial and error that your answer was probably going to be the only practical way subscriptions work. Now that I know, I can be aware of having to check the blank boxes. Not really a big deal now that I know how it works.
